Description
The Institute of Rehabilitation, Slovenia, was established by the Executive Council of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia on January 25, 1954. The institute is a rehabilitation hospital and research center includes the following units: Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinic Orthotics and prosthetics Center Vocational Rehabilitation Center Functional Diagnostics and Research Unit Pharmacy Library The main areas of activity of the Institute of Rehabilitation are: - Medical rehabilitation, treatment of inpatients and outpatients on the basis of diagnosis, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, sports and recreation; - Psychosocial rehabilitation, careers guidance, vocational rehabilitation; - Production and application of orthotic and prosthetic aids; - Production of rehabilitation equipment; - Research and development in the field of rehabilitation and in the field of technology of orthopedic and rehabilitation aids; - Education in the field of rehabilitation, provision of specialization and postgraduated programs in physical medicine and rehabilitation, prosthetics, orthotics and vocational rehabilitation; and - Organization of workshops, conventions, seminars and symposia, frequently on an international level. The institute treats about 10 000 patients a year, of which over 1 900 are treated in hospital wards with total capacity of 200 beds. Medical rehabilitation persons with the most severe disabilities is conducted by teams applying a multidisciplinary approach. The majority of patients are persons with spinal cord injuries, head injuries, stroke, rheumatic diseases, degenerative diseases, patients with amputations and children, mostly with cerebral paralysis and injuries. Since 1991, the Institute has been the WHO Collaborating Center for Rehabilitation and 1999 it has been cooperating with the Kent State University, Ohio and the Division of the partial Agreement in the Social and Public Health Field at the Council of Europe.
