Abstract
Due to the imbalance in growth and allowable cut in Slovenia forests are growing older and thicker. As a result the amount of decay and abiotic damage esp. in the stem centre (»core wood«) increases over time. Climax stands are referred to as being »decadent« from a timber management perspective. In this study the spatio-temporal development of most important age phonomina in silver fir and beech will be studied and the wood-quality-rotation age under different growth conditions determined. As the most import tree species has nondurable wood, this material needs to be preserved. The service life of such wood needs to be predictable in order to compete with other materials (concrete, plastics…).
