Significance for science
The project was of primarily technical nature therefore the scientific objectives have not been in the forefront. Nevertheless, we achieved several scientific achievements and effects.
- We have elucidated timber flows in Slovenia.
- We have identified key areas with lack of knowledge and which should be highlighted in the future research. Key areas are: service life prediction of wood and wood products, review of material flow in various types of furniture and the introduction of new paradigms, such as cradle to cradle.
- Furthermore we established connection with experts from forest-wood production chain, which will lead to further synergies in and between research institutions.
- The results were presented at several scientific and professional meetings, what enhances the role and prestige of science in Slovenia.
Significance for the country
- Forest-wood production chain is facing considerable issues. In this project we have proposed solutions on how to find a way out of crisis.
- Improving the processing of wood is of great importance for the Slovenian economy. In Slovenia, there is approximately 4 m3 of timber produced annually, that should be processed at home, to the highest value added as possible. Thus, wood offers many attractive job opportunities. Jobs are diverse and accessible especially to rural areas.
- Wood processing is environmentally friendly and is CO2 neutral.
- Most of the waste wood, can be easily reused and there is no need to be disposed of in the landfills.
- In Slovenia, we have the knowledge and tradition of wood processing.
