The relevance of the research program "Bioinformatics and Statistical Mechanics of Molecular Systems " stems from several aspects: - The research carried out in the framework of the program generated new knowledge what promotes Slovenia on the scale of innovativeness. - In the framework of the research program the young researchers were raised. - Two members of the program research group are involved in the university teaching process on the undergraduate and postgraduate level. In this way the knowledge generated within the program research is to new generations. - Among the results of the research that deserve special attention are certainly newly patented substances which form a basis for further work and the implementations of new methods for the development of new active chemical entities. As far as new methods are concerned let us mention the approach which is based on quantum chemical descriptors such as molecular electrostatic potentials, combined with the methods of artificial inteligence such as neural nets and genetic algorithms.
