Market and Competition The analysis of the market competition of the research group was the basis for formulating the policy of entrepreneurial development and competitiveness of the Slovene government in the period 1999-2000. On this basis development programs for restructuring of Slovene enterprises with the goal to successfully compete internationally were developed. The development program for acceleration of competitive capabilities was formulated. The program includes horizontal measures for stimulating the introduction of continuous improvement system in enterprises, external benchmarking, marketing approaches, networking of enterprises and specialization, development of business infrastructure, internalization of enterprises and forming of strategic partnership and direct foreign investment. Programs for restructuring of leather and textile industry were designed. The Ministry of Economy used the results of the research group as the basis for accession negotiation in the area of industrial policy. Industrial policy research was also indirectly the basis for preparation of the energy sector law in line with the European trends in this area. The results in the area of game theory served as the basis for the proposals for organizing licensing auctions in the area of telecommunications. The work on the system of statistical measurement of economic structure has led to close cooperation between the Faculty of Economics and the Statistical Bureau to establish the access of researchers to individual data according to EU standards. The model of indicators supporting decision making process in the area of economic development is included in the preparation of the Strategy of Economic development of Slovenia. The members of the research group succeded to include Slovenia in the yearly international research of competitiveness World Competitiveness Yearbook, published by IMD from Lousane and in Global Competitiveness Report, published by World Economic Forum, Geneva. These research studies have become an important source of information which enables Slovenian policy makers to evaluate nation's competitive position against the most important countries in the world. Entrepreneurship In the area of entrepreneurship the statistical base for structural analysis of SMEs in Slovenia was developed, which in turn was the basis for designing the strategy of SME development in Slovenia. The members of this research group are the main authors of the Strategy of SME development in Slovenia for the 2001-2005 period prepared by Slovene government. In the framework of the Stability Pact the group is transferring the knowledge on entrepreneurship development to the countries of former Yugoslavia. The results of the research group are included in the textbooks and manuals (for example, the manual for writing up business plans and textbooks on entrepreneurship for high schools). The work on statistical bases of SMEs done by this research group was an important basis for the beginning of carrying out the annual research on SMEs and entrepreneurship in the framework of European research project SME Observatory and research project GEM (Global Entrepreneurship Monitor). The research activities of our group have undoubtedly contributed that entrepreneurship as an academic discipline became recognized in Slovenia and that entrepreneurship courses were introduced to elementary schools, high schools and institutions of higher education throughout Slovenia. The research results are also the basis for the methodology for the selection of Gazelle of the year by the business magazine Gopsodarski vestnik.
