Computational methods and clinical applications for spine imaging: Third International Workshop and Challenge

Basing on the visibility of research achievements in the field of processing and analysis of medical spine images, the project leader Tomaž Vrtovec became a member of the organization committee of this international workshop. The workshop proceedings were published as a volume in the series Lecture Notes in Computer Science, published by Springer.

Associate editor (Image Analysis & Stereology, Journal of Medical Imaging)

Project leader Tomaž Vrtovec has, basing on the research achievements of the project group, retained the position of Associate Editor for two international journals, namely Image Analysis & Stereology (journal with an impact factor, COBISS-ID 106479104) in Journal of Medical Imaging (journal with a directed strategy, COBISS-ID 11064916), which is of high socioeconomic importance for the project group.

Automated planning of pedicle screw size and insertion trajectory

Within the project we developed a novel method for automated planning of the pedicle screw size and insertion trajectory. The method removes / replaces the need for manual preoperative planning, which is time-consuming, technologically demanding (visualization, navigation and manipulation of 3D spine images), affected by the subjective interpretation of the observer (usually the surgeon that will perform the surgery) and with a steep learning curve. As such, the method has a marketing potential as a stand-alone application or a part of a general surgery planning software. This potential will be researched and evaluated in further project development.
