A procedure for the retrofitting of large-scale heat exchanger networks for fixed and flexible designs applied to existing refinery total site

Developed procedure by authors L. Čuček and Z. Kravanja for the retrofitting of existing large-scale Total Sites (TS) for the purpose of energy consumption reduction and increasing energy efficiency was successfully applied on an existing refinery complex. Obtained results in analysed units showed significant savings: - maximum potential for energy savings was 48.7 % in average, - all profitable modifications showed 37.3 % energy savings in average, and – 15 modifications which are both feasible and profitable enabled 14 % of energy savings in average.

Corrosion inhibitors

Matjaž Finšgar was invited to give a lecture at the conference Corrosion and Surface Treatment in Industry 2015 in Slovakia. The title of the lecture was Corrosion Inhibitors: Electrochemistry and Surface Analysis. Special attention was devoted to electrochemical and surface analysis of metallic samples where different corrosion inhibitors were adsorbed.

Assessment of the consequences of Liquefied Petroleum Gas releases

On the request of the Ministry of the environment and spatial planning of the Republic of Slovenia, a research was conducted for assessment of the effect zones of the plants where a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is stored and manipulated. The results of this research contribute to the control and prevention of pollution, identification and analysis of the pollution sources, and the protection of the human beings, atmosphere and the environment. It is important for spatial planning of particularly vulnerable areas, like residential, schools, hospitals etc.

The influence of biopolymer structure on leachate pretreatment efficiency.

Magnetite nanoparticles were synthesized with chitosan surface modification. Analyses of such new nanoparticles showed that the properties were improved in order to exchange more metal ions from water. In synthetic solutions total metal ions removal was achieved, with metals such as Zn and Cu. In real compost leachate up to 50 % removal was achieved. The same experiments were performed with algae Spirulina. Algae biomass together with uploaded metal ions is determined as waste material. However, it was successfully transformed into bioplastic for packaging market.

Synthesis of environmentally-benign energy self-sufficient processes under uncertainty

This contribution presents a multi-objective Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) synthesis of a dynamic supply-network under uncertainty applied to food industry. The previously-developed multi-objective model for achieving energy self-sufficiency by integrating renewables such as biomass and other wastes, and solar energy into companies` supply-networks has now been extended to account for the dynamic consideration of variable supply and demand over the year, for uncertainties related to products% demand and sun radiation, and for multi-objective optimisation, in order to obtain the most sustainable company`s supply-network.
