In this work we presented some latest applications of thermal lens spectrometry (TLS) for determination of Ag based on the on-line formation of Ag nanoparticles in a flow injection system, as well as detection of biomarkers by thermal lens microscopy (TLM) in microfluidic systems following immobilization of antibodies on magnetic nanoparticles. In addition, capability of beam deflection spectroscopy (BDS) of determining energy band gaps and carrier lifetimes in semiconductor-based nanostructured materials was demonstrated for titanomagnetite synthesized by atomic layer deposition to form an ultrathin (( 10 nm) overlayer (Fe3−xTixO4) grown on alfa-Fe2O3 and epsilon-Fe2O3 columnar structures (80 - 600 nm) formed by chemical vapor deposition on Si(100) substrate.

COBISS.SI-ID: 3959803This plenary lecture at 18 ICPPP conference is a review of most significant contributions and applications of thermal lens spectrometry, with emphasis on most recent achievements in instrumentation, which culminated into construction of novel optimized TLM instruments, capable of exploiting the tuneability of incoherent light sources, and enabled novel applications particularly in micro-fluidics. Based on latest progress relying on bio-analytical assays and micro-fluidic flow injection with TLM detection we have also witnessed first routine applications of TLS in analytical and diagnostic laboratories, which on one side actually classifies TLS as a conventional and routine analytical tool, but at the same time opens new horizons for development and applications of this ultrasensitive and rapid spectrometric technique.

In the last six decades mercury has been one of the most commonly used electrode materials despite its well-known toxic character; there were numerous attempts to replace mercury with other non-toxic or less toxic electrode materials with similar electroanalytical characteristics. In the year 2000 we introduced (in collaboration with our American partner) a bismuth film electrode as a promising "green" alternative to mercury film electrode, and in 2007 we presented an antimony film electrode. In this contribution some recent achievements were presented considering development and application studies of bismuth- and antimony-based electrodes for measuring particularly trace (heavy) metal ions and selected pharmaceuticals in combination with electrochemical stripping techniques. Several configurations of bismuth and antimony electrodes were overviewed together with examples of their application, and a novel copper film electrode for anodic stripping voltammetric operation was presented.
