Presentation of the project "Sites of memory, sites of barrier: memory and identity in the Italo-Slovene borderlands in the long twentieth century"

As part of the international workshop "Memories in Translation", organized in cooperation with The University of Bremen (Germany) and the University of Toronto (Canada) the Project Leader has presented the research design, the methods and the aims of the project. The kick-off meeting has been organized in order to connect the members of the project team with established international scholars. Together they analysed the methodological frame and the possibilities to further develop singular project aspects. At the same time the meeting served to promote the project in the international academic sphere.

Bazovica / Basovizza. Place of heroes and victims

The paper has been presented as key-note speech at the international workshop "Memories in Translation". Based on an in-depth analysis of discourses and practices of commemoration the multi-layerness of Bazovica/Basovizza has presented. This case represents a key factor where vision of the past of this borderland collide and clash.

The mining archives. Subjectivity, affect, and political economies of liminality

The paper approaches visual material – centered upon the figure of a miner in the socialist Yugoslavia and post-Yugoslav societies – as public archives. The paper concentrates on portraits of miners and monuments dedicated to miners and on the ways they were circulated in and interpreted by wider society.
