Cherenkov TOF PET with silicon photomultipliers

The detection of low-energy gamma rays with an accuracy of about one hundred picoseconds is a big challenge both for experimental particle physics and medical physics. A study of a 4x4 matrix of PbF2 crystals with silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) as light sensors gave very encouraging results, a time resolution of 200ps (FWHM). This result opens new possibilities in developing new, more accurate and less expensive apparatuses for imaging with positron tomography and in material research.
