Center of excellence for integrated approaches in chemistry and biology of proteins

CIPKeBiP was established to offer the platform for life science research at the molecular level. Development of technological expertise and know-how were driven by the state of the art equipment divided into five platforms: light microscopy, mass spectroscopy, biochemical characterization, x-ray structure determination and bioinformatics. The results and know-how are already used in the process of new technological development together with the industrial partners to discover, develop and produce new active pharmaceutical ingredients. The enhanced synergy of this partnership is reflecting on the education of highly qualified and skilled personnel at the beginning of their scientific careers for the needs of academic and industrial research. Centre of excellence connects the top available expertise and technology of Slovenian research groups and industry. Collaborations and international memberships (European Integrated Structural Biology Infrastructure INSTRUCT, European Grid Initiative) enable us to access state of the art technology and know-how.

Structural insight in the substrate specificity of cathepsins

Slovenian pharmaceutical company Krka annually awards independent research projects related to pharmaceutical industry. Awarded projects come from various scientific and technological areas and contribute significantly to the scientific excellence and research quality in Slovenia, and enable the flow of knowledge and the interweaving of the basic and applied research.

Production of biobutanol by the synthetic biology approach

iGEM is the acronym of the world's largest student competition in synthetic biology. In 2015 the first ever Slovenian high school team attended the event. Eight students from different high schools completed an extensive research under the supervision of experts from the National Institute of Chemistry and University of Ljubljana Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology. The topic of the project was development of bacteria that would be able to convert butanoic acid into butanol. Based on Clostridium acetobutylicum genome they prepared gene constructs and successfully expressed them in Escherichia coli. In parallel, they optimized growth conditions, examined the role of substrate and product onto bacterial growth and investigated other process parameters that would be important in the production stage.
