Workflow development for 3D interpretation and modeling of subbottom structure from a dense grid of 2D sonar profiles

We developed a workflow for systematic data acquisition and 3D interpretation and modeling of high-resolution subbottom acoustic sonar profiles. We determined optimal geometry of the profile network and fine-tuned the survey acquisition parameters. Using freely available software, we defined the workflow for raw data filtering, noise removal and signal improvement, and conversion to industry-standard data formats. Geological interpretation and 3D modeling of subbottom structure is performed with the open-source seismic interpretation package OpendTect. Viability of our method was demonstrated at the Strunjan bay test site, where we reconstructed subbottom spatial geometry of pre-Holocene river channels and associated levees and crevasse splays, which are covered by Holocene marine mud.

Rates and styles of active deformation at the Alps-Dinarides transition: geodetic vs. geologic data.

The presentation summarized state-of-the-art understanding of active tectonic processes at the Alps-Dinarides transition, emphasizing the comparison of short-term geodetic and long-term geologic observations and pointing out the current controversies. The talk included research results of the current project from the Gulf of Trieste, which was presented as an example area where Quaternary-active faults were determined, but where no Recent seismic or geodetic evidence of activity was found. This was a solicited talk presented by the Principal Investigator at the 20th Congress of the Carpathian-Balkan Geological Association, 24-26 September 2014, Tirana, Albania.

Geological structure and tectonic evolution of the Gulf of Trieste

The talk presented an overview of geological and geophysical research in the Gulf of Treste, and the tectonic interpretation. To a large extent, the presentation was based on seismic reflection profiles that were acquired in the frame of the current project in 2013. The invitation by conference organizers reflects the impact of the first project results in the Slovenian geological community. Talk was presented by the Principal Investigator as a plenary lecture at the 4. Slovenian Geological Congress, Ankaran, 8.-10. oktober 2014.
