Laboratory testing of insect associated fungi for the control of wireworms (Agriotes sp. L.)

Laboratory experiments describe the entomopathogenicity of 6 fungal species isolated from various substrata from Slovenia against larvae of the insect Agriotes sp. The fungal isolates included Beauveria bassiana, B. brongniartii, Metarhizium anisopliae (2 isolates), M. robertsii, Purpureocillium lilacinum and Clonostachys solani. Abbott’s corrected mortality after 90 d ranged from 20.7 to 76.9%. The most promising candidate biological control agent was an isolate of Metarhizium anisopliae.

The one fungus / one name concept and new rules for regulating the use of fungal names

Significant nomenclatural changes becoming effective on 1 January 2013 and having a great impact on the usage of fungal names by plant pathologists are reviewed. The separate naming of different morphs of many pleomorphic ascomycetes and basidiomycetes is not permitted anymore for establishing the »one name for one fungus« principle. The presentation discusses a set of examples of fungi relevant for plant pathologists as post harvest disease agents, plant pathogens and biological control agents.
