In this paper we address two issues concerning real-world time-continuous emotion detection from videos of users’ faces: (i) the impact of weak ground truth on the emotion detection accuracy and (ii) the impact of the users’ facial expressiveness on the emotion detection accuracy. We implemented an appearance-based emotion detection algorithm that uses Gabor features and a k nearest neighbors classifier. We tested the performance of this algorithm on two datasets with different ground truth strengths (a firm ground truth dataset and a weak ground truth dataset). Then we split the dataset into three subsets reflecting different levels of users’ facial expressiveness (low, mid and high) and performed separate emotion detection.

This paper describes a procedure for metrological evaluation of skin conductance measurement. Three commercial devices for measuring skin conductance were calibrated by comparison with a precision digital ohmmeter used as a reference. Combined measurement uncertainty of skin conductance meters was calculated by means of uncertainty of reference instrument and uncertainties due to measurement repeatability, reproducibility, resolution and environmental condition. Measurement uncertainty analysis showed that contributions due to resolution and sensitivity of the measuring device, usually obtained from specifications, are negligible when compared to uncertainty of measuring method.

This article presents the construction, exploratory dimensionality analysis (Study 1), and validation (Study 2) of the self-report and 36-item Individuation Test for Emerging Adults (ITEA). It is the first instrument to measure different aspects of individuation (in relation to mother and father) specifically in emerging adulthood. The construct validity of the final 5-factor structure (Support Seeking, Connectedness, Intrusiveness, Self-Reliance, and Fear of Disappointing the Parent) was satisfactory. The results of multigroup analyses demonstrated that the factor structure is stable across male and female emerging adults for ITEA assessments in relation to both mother and father. The ITEA scales also show good internal consistency and concurrent validity against Emotional, Conflictual, and Functional Dependence scales of the Psychological Separation Inventory.
