D. Leadership

The Principle Investigator during the course of the research project left Slovenian National Institute of Chemistry and got appointed as Head of the Laboratory for Physical Chemistry and Chemical Thermodynamics at Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, University of Maribor. He directs the research and teaching work of 2 Assistant Professors, 2 Postdocs, two PhD students and 1 Technician. He is a Vice-Dean for research and development and a memember of the University and Faculty Senate as well as of the Faculty Governing Council and Habilitation Committee. Professor Bren lectures undergraduate and graduate courses in Physical Chemistry, Statistical Thermodynamics, Molecular Modeling, Biomolecular Simulations and Thermodynamic Calculations. He is a member of the Managing Board of Slovenian Young Academy and of the ARRS working group MR+. Professor Šolmajer heads the Laboratory for molecular modeling of the Slovenian National Institute of Chemistry, Professor Filipič the Department for Genetic Toxicology and Cancer Biology at the Slovenian National Institute of Biology and Professor Vlachy leads the ARRS Programme in Physical Chemistry.

E. Awards

Commitment of the Principle Investigator and Ljubljanske mlekarne d.d. to develop the best natural polyphenolic scavenger of chemical carcinogens further into a food supplement received the 2014 Award of Socially-Responsible Business Practices in Bled. Professor Bren also menthored Master theses, which received Krka, Henkel and Dean's Award, as well as high-school research projects, which received Krka award, the first place at the Competition of young researchers for the development of Maribor and the bronze medal at the Slovenian meeting of young researchers. Professor Janežič was for her exceptional research achievements given the highest Slovenian Zois Award, Professor Flilipič the Slovenian Zois Prize and Professor Lah the Pregel award of the Slovenian National Institute of Chemistry.

C. Editorship and Patents

Principle Investigator is an Editorial Board Member of an International Scientific magazine Journal of Chemistry listed in the ISI Web of Science and possessing an impact factor. Profesor Janežič is an Editorial Board Member of prestegeous international scientific magazines Journal of Cheminformatics and Journal of Chemical Information and Modeling, Professor Filipič of Mutation Research and of Food and Chemical Toxicology and Professor Vlachy of Condensed Matter Physics. The project group members also got approved four patents by the European, American and Japanese Patent Offices.

B. Invited Lectures

For three years the Principle Investigator Professor Urban Bren served as a Guest Professor at the Institute for Molecular Modeling, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, Austria. He taught a graduate course in Biomolecular Simulations for students of Bioinformatics and he received high student evaluations. At the international symposium "23rd International BIOMOS Symposium on Biomolecular Simulation, 9.-11. 9. 2013, Ausserberg, Švica" he gave an invited lecture "Taq polymerase: a challenging system for comparison of empirical and rigorous free-energy methods". He was invited to the "Faculty of Pharmacy, Comenius University, Bratislava, Slovakia, 28. 6. 2013" to give a lecture "Cooperativity of ketoconazole and aflatoxin binding to cytochrome P450 3A4" and to the "Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, New York, USA, 14. 8. 2013" to give a lecture "The influence of rotations, translations and vibrations on the solvation properties of water". The Principle Investigator also delivered an invited lecture on Computer simulations of aflatoxin B1 activation and genotoxicity at Mycotoxin Summer Talks 2014, 4.7., Universitäts- und Forschungszentrum, Tulln. Finally, the Principle Investigator presented his research work on Chemical Carcinogenesis in a series of invited lectures at international scientific conferences Math/Chem/Comp 2015 and 2016, BIBE 2015 and NanoMathChem 2015.

F. Popularization of Science

The Principle Investigator gave an interview "Cancer Prevention" for the National Television and an interview "Chemical Carcinogens and Their Scavengers - Who Will Be Faster?" for supplement Znanost of the leading Slovenian newspaper Delo. On the occassion of awarding the Nobel Prize to the field of Computational Chemistry Professor Urban Bren published a popular aricle Computer simulations in the field of Chemistry for a Slovenian expert magazine Chemistry in School and Society. The Principle Investigator also presented his research work at popular television shows Tednik (Slovenian national television) and Vizita 24 ur (commercial television Pop TV). Finally, the Principal Investigatore delivered a series of popular lectures for high-school students at II. Gimnazija Maribor and at Gimnazija Franca Miklošiča Ljutomer as well as was invited as a participant to the round table Slovenian Terminology in Professional Life: Current State and Future Needs.
