1.
Component coatings : overview, properties and concerns in coatings selection

Based on the extensive research work in the field of surface engineerting of tools dr. Podgornik was invated to give an invited talk at the ICMT13 international conference on materials. In his lecture he gave an overview of hard coatings used for tools and machine parts. The review involved methods, tribological and mechanical properties, and degree of industrialization. In the second part he focused on the limitations, problems and approaches to the proper selection of hard coatings for given application/contact conditions.

The procedure to produce aluminium – ceramic composite, which comprises fine dispersion of ceramic particles

Patent describes new process for preparation of aluminium-ceramic composite with superior wear resistance, besed on compression and sintering technique. Composite comprises of fine reinforcement particles, allowed in the milling process in protective atmosphere. Fine ceramic particles are reduced to nano-size and mechanically merged with metallic particles in Al alloy.

3.
Development of ultra-fine martensitic/bainitic duplex alloy with ultra-high strength

Research resukts show that through the formation of ultra-cean martensitic microstructure with controlled formation of segregations greatly enhanced properties can be obtained. This includes tensile strength and fracture toughness, but mainly fatigue resistance. Key element is proper formation and distribution of segregations. Based on the results company Štore Steel developed new ultra-high strength spring steel.

4.
Technology optimization for successful implementation of recycled aluminium

Research on the impact of the Al alloy modification made from recycled Al show that the biggest impact comes from the content of Fe, present in recycled Al as an impurity. Fe forms brittle intermetallic phase which leads to the deterioration of the mechanical properties of the casting. The results will be used in Cimos foundry for casting of the automotive parts.

F.10 Improvements to an existing technological process or technology

5.
Reduction of surface decarburization for BRM2 and OCR12VM steels

Investigation of the oxidation and decarburization of the tool steel has shown that the low-temperature oxidation close to α-γ transformation results in a compact oxide layer, which inhibits stronger oxidation and decarburization during subsequent heating at higher temperatures. For this method, patent application was prepared and method implemented in the company Metal Ravne.
