Variety trial was conducted in 2012 and 213 at four locations (Prekmurje and Savinja valley on different soil). Included varieties were: Danish Vega and Hoga, German Calena, Bio Calena and Ligena and Slovenian autochthonous variety. In the experiments weeds were not mechanicaly removed and the current legislation regarding plant protection products was considered. The problems of Camelina production in lowland agricultural areas in Savinjska Valley and in Prekmurje were: i) the unavailability of plant protection means against diseases and pests and weeds; ii) Camelina is not adapted to the high temperatures, especially when temperatures were above 30 °C more days in a row and the air was dry. Husks were starting to open and seeds were falling out; iii) high sensitivity to low temperature and/or wet, cold soil in spring. In the year of 2013, when the spring was cold and wet, there was no adequate emergence and no harvest; iv) the yield was low, only about 0.5 t/ha, with exception of Camelina on heavy soil in Savinjska Valley in the year 2012. The crop is more suitable for smaller areas, which allow rapid intervention and some manual work, so the yield is guaranteed, especially if the seed is compressed and we sell oil, which achieves a very good price.

COBISS.SI-ID: 657804On the radio Ognjišče during the lifetime of of the project we had two contributions on the topic of production and use of flax. With the mentioned one we represented possibilities of flax seed addition in feed mixtures as possibility for omega-3 fatty acids increase in eggs and pork. Both contributions have been published on the website of the radio, in archives, and so accessible to the general public all the time.

COBISS.SI-ID: 635788Field experiment with six French flax varieties (Recital, Niagara, Princess, Altess, Comtess and Duchess) was conducted in 2012 on four different locations (two in Prekmurje, two in Savinja Valley, on different soil) as a block trial in four replications. There were no pests or disease detected, the bigger problem represented weeds. Varieties Recital and Princess started to flower earlier compared to the other varieties. High temperatures in July accelerated maturation of all varieties, so that they were mature at the same time. Depending on the location and the variety yield of 927 (variety Princess at location Murska Sobota) to 2288 (variety Altess at the location Savinja Valley 2) kg/ha dry matter was reached. The lowest yield was achieved at the location where soil was light (the year 2012 was rather dry), the largest yield was achieved on the heaviest soil included in our experiment. Weather conditions had a significant impact on yield, too. In Savinja Valley the highest yield achieved varieties Altess and Duchess, while in Prekmurje varieties Comtess and Duchess. On sandy soil in the dry year variety Comtess was indicated as the most suitable, but on heavier soil all the other varieties reached better yield.

COBISS.SI-ID: 619148On the radio Ognjišče during the lifetime of of the project we had two contributions on the topic of production of Camelina. With the mentioned one we represented possibilities of Camelina production and integration in field crop rotation in Slovenia with regard to production location, especialy altitude, and size of the field. Both contributions on this topic have been published on the website of the radio, in archives, and so accessible to the general public all the time.

COBISS.SI-ID: 657292Consumption of flax for food is growing rapidly due to a high fiber and omega-3 fatty acids content in seeds and high nutritional value. The demand and thus the price are increasing. So, it is reasonable to consider extending the production in our country, too. Field experiment was set up in two different areas of Slovenia (Prekmurje and Savinjska dolina). Presented results are from year 2012. We studied the influence of different pre-sowing tillage (ploughing and without ploughing), nitrogen rate (0, 30, 60, 90 kg/ha N and organic production - EKO /50 kg/ha N/) and time of sowing (beginning of April – S1, the second half of April – S2) on the yield of variety Recital. Yield in Savinjska dolina (1256 kg/ha) was significantly higher than in Prekmurje, where it was similar, regardless of the method of soil preparation (at ploughing treatment 875 kg/ha, at treatment without ploughing 887 kg/ha). With EKO treatment the yield was comparable to the yield of the treatment where similar N rate was applied in the form of mineral fertilizer. There was a negative impact of increasing rates of nitrogen on the flax yield in Savinjska dolina. Yield was higher at S1 compared to S2, where weeds had outgrown flax. In Prekmurje N rate and sowing time did not have significant impact on the yield. There were no problems with diseases and pests, but with weeds.
