Researchers' night

In September 2011 we successfully organized Researcher’s Night 2011 with a goal to promote science, scientists and their results. The event was organized in collaboration with Faculty of Information Studies Novo mesto within the INSARTY (Introducing Science and Art to Slovenian Youth and Citizens) FP project. In order to reach the specific objective of bringing researchers closer to the public at large the Researcher’s Night was organized at different locations in the centre of Ljubljana (Prešeren Square, Jožef Stefan Institute, Prešernova street) and Novo mesto (Janez Trdina Cultural Centre). The estimated total number of visitors at all venues was between 3000 and 4000. The event received big attention in national media (national TV and radio, POP TV, etc.). High interest was also reflected with over 23.000 visits on a web page www.zaznanost.si and 754 “Likes” on Facebook. During the event, we successfully demonstrated the use of videoconferencing technologies that has been developed within the project.

Web-based video conferencing system

Within the applied research project in work package WP1 we have developed a web-based video-conferencing system for several types of audio and video communication in the context of teaching and business processes. This became a building block in the platform. As a starting point for the development of the system we used an existing open source conferencing system OpenMeetings, which was customized on carefully prepared pre-designed use scenarios and upgraded into a comprehensive system. The developed video-conferencing system was integrated into two different complex systems, such as the LMS of the project co-financer. The main purpose of the video conferencing system, which is located at: http://meet.e5.ijs.si, is support for services of simple daily online communications where users do not require the installation of special software. The system allows the basic features such as: audio/video, public/private chat, whiteboard for the exchange and display of documents in various formats, web pages, screen sharing, voting, adding users to the event and recording. The system was successfully used and tested at the presentation of research papers, masters and doctoral dissertations among remote participants at the Jožef Stefan International postgraduate school. The system was also used during several international meetings and conferences.

Team leadership in international R&D projects

Members of the project team were involved in several related EU research and development projects, such as STORK 2.0 from the EU CIP programme, P2PNext from EU FP7, and OpenScout from the eContentplus programme. Based on the results from this project, they obtained in 2013 an integrated EmployID project from the EU FP7 that was the top ranked projects from over 100 project proposals in the technology enhanced learning area. The main goal of the EmployID (Scalable cost-effective facilitation of professional identity transformation in public employment services) project is development of modern e-learning systems and solutions for European Public Employment Services organisations. One of the starting building blocks and tools in EmployID will also be a collaborative environment and tools developed in this project.

5.
Future Internet collaboration platform

The project has developed a platform for Future Internet communication. The platform enables implementation of use cases considered by the project and integrates adapted and developed building blocks with the learning management system of the project industrial partner (eCampus LMS) and the open source based LMS Moodle. The blocks of the Future Internet collaboration platform enable multimedia communication, private/public chat, shared whiteboard, screen sharing, voting, recording, competence and skills based content metadata ingest and searching, secure and scalable content distribution based on P2P protocols and mechanisms and graphical authentication. They are based on open source technologies like OpenMeetings and Matterhorn, and technologies developed in collaboration with European projects from the FP7 program, such as P2P-Next (NetShare), OpenScout from the EU eContentplus program, and Stork 2.0 from the EU CIP program. A connector server implementing simple and unified RESTful API interlinks the blocks with the partner platform enabling their management and usage. The platform deployment is possible through instantiation in one or more virtual machines. The platform has been successfully tested in the industrial partner environment.
