Method of manufacturing fully dense Nd-fe-B magnets with enhanced coercivity and gradient microstructure

Highly coercive permanent Nd-Fe-B-based magnets were successfully developed from commercially available MQU-F rapidly quenched ribbons with optimized composition by wet coating with DyF3 in isopropanol and subsequent spark plasma sintering and heat-treatment. Highest HCi enhancement was obtained at 2.2 wt.% Dy-fraction, i.e. from 1580 to 2025 kA/m, which is 25 % improvement. When more than 3 wt.% of Dy was added, the coercivity enhancement started to decrease, whereas at 4.8 wt.% the coercivity of as-sintered magnet was lower than it was for non-coated one and it was further decreasing with annealing time.

Europe tries to find new magnets

Due to the winning European project ROMEO, 4 mio EUR, and the role of co-ordinator, I had a TV interview in the central news. The project has 13 partners 7 of them are the most successful academic groups in the field and 5 bigest European industral partners.

Replacement and original magnet engineering options

KOBE, Spomenka. Replacement and original magnet engineering options : presented at 3rd Trilateral EU-US-Japan Conference on Critical Materials: towards New Models in Efficient Management of Critical Materials 29-30 May 2013, Brussels. 2013. On the invitation of European Commission in the frame of joint efforts between Europe, US and Japan at the 3rd Trilateral Conference I have presented the efforts of the strongest European Research Groups in the field of rare-earth permanent magnets, due to the Chinese restrictions on Rare-Earths.
