Chitosan and its derivatives as an adsorbate for cellulose fibres' anti-microbial functionalizations

The purpose of this paper was to carry out a comparison between commercial chitosan (primary amino groups) and its derivatives (chitosan with quaternary ammonia compounds) regarding their potential usage as adsorbates for the functionalization of textile surfaces. The physical-chemical properties were analysed with an emphasis on the fibre functional groupsć determinations, plus a characterization of the antimicrobial properties of the functionalized cellulose fibres. It was concluded that quaternary chitosan when compared to commercial chitosan (amino groups), adsorbs in a larger quantity on the fibre surface, and introduces a higher content of available amino groups on the fibres' surfaces, thus consequently leading to greater antimicrobial efficiency.
