L1-4292 — Annual report 2013
1.
Hazardous to your health

Healthcare is known to be dangerous to patients. Of the 421 million hospitalisations in the world annually, 42.7 million are estimated to be associated with some degree of adverse event or unsafe care. Healthcare providers and policy makers are seeking to change this and the evidence shows that change is possible. Other safety critical sectors have been more successful at reducing harm by using risk based approaches. In healthcare there is evidence that the use of system level methods to assess and manage risk improves quality. For example, the recent MARQuIS study found that these hospitals [i.e. hospi-tals that can demonstrate effective risk management] “have either ISO certification or accreditation are safer and better than those which have neither”.
