When we were Europe: Remembering industrial labor in the former Yugoslavia

Invited lecture at the University of Amsterdam, in which particular attention is paid to endeavors to negotiate legacy of industrial labor as cultural heritage undertaken by workers and local community members. It discusses the place of socialist industrialization in the common European cultural imagery, the role of intimate knowledge and personal experience in framing present political demands, and, finally, the place of Yugoslavia in the newly articulated narratives of the 20th century modernity in the post-Yugoslav societies.

Image of Trieste and Trieste region in poetry of Slovenian and Italian female writers in the first half of the 20th century

The lecture introduces Slovenian and Italian female poets from the first half of the 20th century who dealt with Trieste region in their works. In the introduction it outlines their biographies, then it dwels on convergences and divergences in the works of Slovenian and Italian poets at thematic, ideational and formal levels.

Partisan resistance today? National Liberation Struggle musical practices and social engagement

The authors investigate revolutionary heritage of National liberation struggle and anti-fascist resistance in the former Yugoslavia from the perspective of historiography, musicology and cultural studies. To do this they analyse lyrics and musical characteristics of a number of partisan, workers and revolutionary songs from the time of WWII and also several popular music examples from post-war socialist period. Additionally, the lecture offers insight into post-socialist present and focuses on contemporary uses of National liberation struggle, its music, iconography and messages which oftentimes continue or revive musical tradition of resistance.
