Astronomy and its role in ancient Mesoamerica

The article is a synthesis of current knowledge about astronomy and its social role in Mesoamerican societies, whose familiarity with the regularities of the apparent motion of the Sun, the Moon and bright planets is attested in their sophisticated calendrical system, in a large amount of astronomical data contained in codices and monumental hieroglyphic inscriptions, and in architectural alignments. It was particularly due to its practical utility that astronomy, intertwined with religious ideas and practices, had such an important place in the worldview and, consequently, in the cosmologically substantiated political ideology of Mesoamerican peoples.

Astronomical orientation of churches at Tonovcov grad

An archaeoastronomical study at the archaeological site of Tonovcov grad near Kobarid revealed that the orientations of three early Christian churches can be related to major lunar standstills and sunrises on Candlemas, one of the important Christian feasts. The article presents the results of measurements and contextual data that support the intentionality of these astronomical alignments.
