Toxicity of chitosan magnetic nanoparticles as carriers for biologicaly active substances

The aim of this work was to determine the toxic effects of prepared chitosan magnetic nanoparticles (CMN) on five different bacterial cultures. For this purpose three Gram negative bacteria were chosen, Escherichia coli as most commonly tested bacteria, Klebsiella pneumoniae because of its cell capsule and Pseudomonas aeruginosa as a non-fermenting bacteria; and two Gram positive bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis. Three different methods were used for CMN preparation. Scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the surface of materials. For toxicity determination of so prepared CMN ATCC standards for all previously mentioned bacteria were used. SEM images showed the round-spheric morphology of CMN and their size varied from 40 to 350 µm.
