Production of vaccines in plants: TV show Ugriznimo znanost

In the show we have presented the transient transformations of plants and how we change the gene expression in plants. We have shown an example of localization studies and the possibility of plant protein production (e.g. for vaccine production).

The effect of potato virus Y on different wild relatives of potato

In MSc thesis we have studied the response of 15 different species of wild potato relatives to the infection with potato virus Y (PVY) and how efficient is viral multiplication and spread throughout the plant. We observed mild symptoms in only two of the species. PVYNTN efficiently spread in all species except in one. We have also shown that previous inoculation with viral construct for gene silencing has slight effect on PVYNTN spread. PVYN labelled with GFP was successfully multiplied in all of the species, but systemically infected only five of the species.

Heading of acreditated laboratory for GMO detection and introduction of 6 accredited methods

The National Institute of Biology, Department of Biotechnology and Systems Biology is nominated as the national reference laboratory for GM detection from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environement. Laboratory is providing scientific and technical support to ministries and their inspection services and is cooperating with European Union Reference laboratory JRC and with The institute for reference materials and methods (IRMM). It is also the member of the European network of GMO laboratories (ENGL) and regularly informs general public on GMOs, what can be seen from different presentations, contributions for media and general publications. IN 2012 the laboratory introduced six accredited methods.
