Possibilities for geophysical research on sites dated to the Early Iron Age. Case study of Poštela near Maribor (Slovenia)

The article presents the results of the recent archaeological investigations conducted in the broader area of the archaeological complex at Poštela near Maribor. The investigations took into account past field investigations and lidar scanning analyses, and mainly consisted of geophysical surveys combined with adapted ground-truthing procedures (shallow surface geological drilling, test trenches and others). Poštela is a site that boasts a specific natural setting and a variety of archaeological features, but also a site that has been the subject of a variety of geophysical investigations, different analyses of results and an integrated approach to archaeological field research in prehistoric landscapes. As such, Poštela can certainly be seen as a test polygon for systematic and in-depth geophysical investigations in Slovenia.

Landscape and identity politics of the Poštela hillfort

Te article combines archaeological information with remote sensing data and a series of GIS analyses to explore how the relations between movement, visibility, proximity and connectedness of places, meaning and memory intertwine and create a ‘sense of place’ in the landscape around the Iron Age Poštela hillfort near Maribor, north-eastern Slovenia. Analysing the spatial and visual relations between the groups of barrows around the hillfort and their relations to it made it clear that they reflect and establish the community of Poštela with the different identities of its members. As they help bringing the identities into being, barrows and their relations are powerful media for social action and shared public understandings
