Projection of water for irrigation in Slovenia

Water supply and provision of sufficient water of adequate quality for irrigation of agricultural land is one of the major challenges of sustainable development of mankind. Slovenia has a relatively high average rainfall, which ranks among the water-rich countries, but precipitation is spatially and temporally unevenly distributed. The project aims to determine what quantities of water would be detained in Slovenia in the newly constructed building of small non-complex reservoirs. Small reservoirs would be used primarily to meet the needs of the holdings, primarily reflects their own local needs for irrigation of small areas (up to 1 ha) of agricultural crops (vegetation, strawberries, permanent crops). In the analysis we have combined different databases, which include precipitation, evapotranspiration, runoff, geology, soil science, irrigation norms and relief from National irrigation. The project has prepared instructions on how to optimize the construction and maintenance of small water reservoirs and tested existing law in connection with the construction and puts forward suggestions for its optimization. According to irrigation norms for crops, taking into account the water balance of a reservoir calculate how large water reservoir should be built so that we can irrigate a certain area of crop.
