The role and importance of GNSS for Geodynamics

Helplessness in the face of natural disasters demonstrates that our knowledge of the complex Earth’s system is limited. This is why understanding the complex and permanently changing planet Earth, how it supports life, and how human activities effects its ability to support it in the future, is one of the greatest intellectual challenges of humanity. It relates to the great challenge for society as it seeks to achieve prosperity, health and sustainability. Geodesy, with the support of modern space geodetic technology can and has to contribute to meeting these challenges.

Status of the SIGNAL Positioning Service and Transformation between the Local and ETRS89 Coordinates in Slovenia

Ongoing development of the SIGNAL Positioning Service is presented. The service enables real-time positioning with geodetic accuracy. To be able to maintain such a service in long term, high quality national geodetic infrastructure should be realized. The planned zero-order combined geodetic network brings the incorporation of various components of the national spatial reference system, including the terrestrial, levelling, gravimetric, and GNSS networks.

The Quality Role of Height System and Geoid Model in the Realization of GNSS Heighting

This paper presents a quality analysis and comparison of two height reference surfaces. The first is the actual geoid model from the year 2000, and the second is the test geoid model from the year 2010. Quality analysis is based on the comparison of geoid heights determined from measured ellipsoidal and mean-sea-level heights and geoid heights interpolated from the model. Quality of a national geoid model highly depend upon integration of all the components of the spatial reference system. The best solution for integration of these components is a national combined geodetic network.
