The role of higher education in national development: South-Eastern Europe and reconstruction of the Western Balkans.

The paper reconsider the role of higher education (HE) in national developments focusing at the region of South-Eastern Europe (SEE) and a case of reconstruction of the Western Balkans during the last decade. Academic traditions in SEE have been extremely diverse; however, the ‘transition period’ and reconstruction put the region under strong international and global influences. On one hand, traditional diversities are disappearing but new diversities – linked to new national states – are appearing. Thus, the region represents a specific case for research in higher education.

Between national higher education systems and internationalisation : the case of teacher education in Europe.

Internationalisation of HE is addressed from a case study area point of view. Teacher education in Europe has over the past decades been 'upgraded' from training colleges to university programmes. In keeping with the Europeanisation trends, it needs to be structured to allow mobility. If this is to be possible, institutions will need to work towards a policy for all of Europe. However, this will be a challenge since curriculum is localized to local cultures and national interest. Comparative research on recent internationalisation trends shows that teacher education lags behind other areas.
