The paper introduced the elementary technology (baobab pounding, termite-fishing, and ant-dipping) of savanna chimpanzees (P. t. verus) in SE Senegal and its relevance for cultural primatology. The results stem from fieldwork between 2004 and 2008, and are focused on tool analysis (stone anvils, plant probes) and behavioral data from the Fongoli community. Observations of the first habituated ape group in a habitat reminiscent of the landscape where our early ancestors evolved, provided unexpected findings for understanding human evolution (e.g. spear-use in hunting galagos and percussion).
