1.
Atmospheric distribution and deposition of mercury in the Idrija Hg mine region, Slovenia

Seasonal distribution of various mercury species over the air of the Idrija town and calculations of atmospheric deposition rates during the span of one year are presented.

2.
Non-point source mercury emission from the Idrija Hg-mine region

Based on empirical correlations between the degree of Hg emissions from soils and influential parameters (Hg in soil, temperature, solar radiation and soil moisture) mathematical model of mercury emissions at the Idrijca River catchment scale was developed. The model was produced in a GIS environment. The results of this spatial-based model can serve as the basis for the selection of appropriate remediation technologies and remediation scenarios.

Mercury emission and dispersion models from soils contaminated by cinnabar mining and metallurgy

Based on the knowledge gained in the project and in collaboration with colleagues from the University of Castilla-La Mancha in Spain, GIS model of mercury emission and dispersion was build in the Almadén Hg-mine area, which is the Spanish equivalent of the Idrija mine.

4.
The distribution of total and methylmercury concentrations in soils near the Idrija mercury mine, Slovenia, and the dependence of the mercury concentrations on the chemical composition and organic carbon levels of the soil

In collaboration with researchers from Kogoshima University and National Institute for Minamata Disease (NIMD) from Japan, we studied dispersion and change in chemical form of mercury discharged through mining activity in the Idrija region. Distribution of total mercury and methylmercury concentrations were examined along with the chemical composition and organic carbon levels of the soil. The chemical composition and organic carbon levels of the soil provided important information for estimating the dispersion process of mercury at the Idrijca River catchment scale.
