System for digital elevation model generation from Lidar data

Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) has become one of the leading technologies for rapid acquisition of elevation data. In this paper, we present a system for digital elevation model (DEM) construction from LiDAR data. First, we present a visualization technique that allows efficient representation of LiDAR data. For the purpose of the data segmentation, points can be projected on an arbitrary plane, parallel with Z axis. After the ground points are obtained, DEM can be generated. Usually ground points are re-sampled first into a required DEM grid resolution and then triangulated.

Lossless Geometry Compression through Changing 3D geometric coordinates into 1D

The proposed approach works in three main steps. The coordinates of the geometrical model are firstly changed into 1D positional numbers. These positional numbers are then sorted and the differences between adjacent vertices are stored. Finally, these differences are compressed by an arithmetic coder.
