Water networks - theory and practice

In this work, an extended strategy for efficient and applicable water minimization in process industries is presented. The strategy effectively incorporates environmental, organizational and economic aspects accompanying the water minimization issue. The strategy was tested and applied in several water minimization projects involving chemical and process industries. Four case studies are presented for illustration purpose. The results obtained indicate that in most cases water efficiency can be greatly improved by using technologically, environmentally and economically viable solutions. A case study on Pivovarna Laško d. d. is included among the examples.

Process Integration: HEN Synthesis, Exergy Opportunities

The work represents a methodology for simultaneous synthesis of exergy efficient heat recovery/exchange networks. The main topics addressed and incorporated into the framework are: thermodynamic analysis, maximization of heat recovery, synthesis of heat exchanger network and power generation system. The methodology was tested on a large scale Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC). the results obtained indicate that unless a detailed optimization is performed during the synthesis step, optimal trade-offs are missed, which may result in serious power generation losses.
