The author of the article presents a synthetical but at the same time in-depth overview of some basic aspects related to the simultaneous convergence and divergence social and spatial processes that take place in European areas of social and cultural contact. He also addresses the main issues concerning planning or governance of these processes between integration and fragmentation potentials.
