Sustainable evaluation of the landscape above the western part of the Velenje coal basin was based on the model of integral geographic model including the following aspects: economic, environmental and sociogeographic. The holistic integration of conditions and possibilities for sustainable use of underground nonrenewables is performed in the monograph.

Ecological footprint accounting could be carried out by different models. The relation to the economic development is stressed and performed by the economic indicators at the ecological footprint evaluation of the discussed area, which is one of the leading Slovene regions regarding the indicators of investments' value and value of current expenditure connected to the environment protection. The presented ecological footprint model of Šalek Valley is a transparent method applicable also to the smaller landscape units, eg. communities, settlements, what makes it even more useful.
