Sense of community and the importance of values

Sense of community is analysed in two very different types of neighborhoods in Ljubljana, Slovenia: a large housing estate and a middle-class neighborhood of individual houses. The main research question posed is which individual characteristics are associated with sense of community in the two neighborhoods. A specific addition to current knowledge involves the inclusion of values as important characteristics associated with sense of community.

Cross-national broadband digital divides

This book chapter presents work results of researchers from five European countries in the field of understanding new forms of digital divide. It discusses new divisions that are emerging within internet users: between narrowband and broadband. This becomes particularly salient in the light of claims that broadband enables richer experience, activities, and practices; these were studied also within the cross-national comparative perspective.

3.
Key methodological fallacies of digital divide research

When systematising some of the methodological challenges faced in measuring digital divides, this chapter discusses issues in two areas. The first area is related to variations and changes in the definition of what counts as internet usage together with how the indicators are operationalised. The second involves comparing results arising from the three different statistical measures that can be used when interpreting the dynamics of the digital divide.
