Bioavailability of flavonoids: a review of their membrane transport and the function of bilitranslocase in animal and plant organisms.

Fruits and vegetables are rich in flavonoids and epidemiological data show that they confer protection against many chronic diseases. However, flavonoid bioavailability is reported to be low in mammals and the molecular mechanisms of actions are poorly known. The review focuses on membrane transport of flavonoids, a critical determinant of their bioavailability.

Expression of bilitranslocase in the vascular endothelium and its function as a flavonoid transporter.

Various molecular targets of flavonoids have been identified in endothelial cells, such as nitric oxide synthase, NADPH oxidase, adenosine deaminase and 5’-nucleotidase. This would in turn postulate a role of membrane transporters in mediating rapid and specific influx of flavonoids into the endothelium, a question so far addressed by only few studies in spite of its obvious, fundamental importance. This investigation was prompted by finding that human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) express bilitranslocase (TC 2.A.65.1.1; http://www.tcdb.org/),p://www.tcdb.org/).
