Slovenia is a country with one of the world’s highest suicide rates. Association of functional polymorphism 68G>C (Cys23Ser) and a promoter polymorphism -995G>A of serotonin receptor 2C (HTR2C) with suicide has not been determined yet. Study showed a significant association between female suicide victims and polymorphism 68G>C. The significance remained when we combined alleles of female and male populations. An excess of GG genotype and allele G was observed. Haplotype analysis on female population showed marginal association of haplotype G-C with suicide.

Among the most abundant serotonin receptors in the brain is receptor 1A (HTR1A). Results show that allele G of polymorphism -1019C>G depresses receptor expression, which might predispose depression and suicide. In our study a general association with suicide wasn't determined. We showed more stressful life events in the month prior to suicide in the subgroup with CC genotype in comparison to subgroup with CG/GG genotypes. No differences were in numbers of reported stressful life events in childhood. Results implicate an association between suicide completion, genetic background and stress.
