Expression, purification and structural studies of a short antimicrobial peptide.

Chemical synthesis of antimicrobial peptides is up to 20 times more expensive than the synthesis of common antibiotics, which is one of the reasons for the unfavourable attitude of the pharmaceutical industry towards their development. We have developed a system for the production of a recombinant antimicrobial peptide. Due to toxicity of antimicrobial peptides for bacterial cells a system with a fusion protein is needed. In acidic environment, chemical bond between the antimicrobial peptide and the fusion protein (Asp-Pro) splits and releases the biologically active antimicrobial peptide.
