The article presents the origin of the surname Japelj. Two possibilities are prominent: the surname may have arisen from the older surname Apel, which was taken over from the Austrian Ap(p)el, which in turn is, by origin, a hypocorism of the old high German personal name Adalbrecht. It is, however, more probable that the surname is taken from the Austrian surname Jappel, which by origin is a diminutive of the hypocorism Japp belonging to the saintly name Jakob.
