Potato virus Y is currently considered to be the most harmful virus in cultivated potatoes. We have shown that potato tuber storage temperature affects tuber necrosis development. Storage at low temperature down-regulates a large number of genes. On the other hand, infection up-regulates some of the genes with putative involvement in biotic stress and many genes associated with photosynthesis.

COBISS.SI-ID: 3617384On the 18th Triennial Conference of the European Association for Potato Research (EAPR) Oulu,Finland we have presented our our research on intreoduction of resistance genes for PVY, late blight on leaves, potato eelworm and potato wart disease into Slovenian potato breeding programme. Extreme resistance for Potato virus Y has been introduced in all our new potato varieties, followed by introduction of vertical resistance to foliage blight in 1998. One late blight resistant cultivar has been bred so far.

COBISS.SI-ID: 3645288Breeding of new high quality potato cultivars adapted to Slovenian conditions enhance the quality of agricultural products on our market, which provides better foundation to our farmers to compete on domestic and international market. An important benefit is as well healthier food for consumers. New Slovenian cultivar has been bred and tested for Slovenian maket. The use of new domestic cultivars is the only way to maintain the existing seed production system in Slovenia alive in the future and prevent the complete dependence of the country from the imported seed. For all this reasons the results are of great importance for the co-funders of the project.
