This article addresses some features of process manufacturing that have to be taken into account during the design of a production control system in the process industries. The description of a model of a case study polymerization production plant is presented. Based on this model, a control structure framework is proposed, which makes it possible to automate part of the manager’s work. In this study, the model-based controller is introduced to the control structure.

This work concerns an integrated framework for coordinating operational tasks in industrial plants. It refers to the integration of various problem-solving methodologies, with synchronization to continuously changing environment and with the definition of the information flow. The integrated batch control system that is being developed by the group of CEPIMA from UPC is made up of various components and for it a communication scheme is proposed. This scheme is based on XML messages, which are defined by WBF recommendations according to ISA standards.
