Residual stresses after laser surface remelting of cast iron as a function of microstructure constituents

In this investigation, the size and variation of residual stresses after laser surface remelting were measured as a function of the modified layer depth on flat specimens from nodular iron. Optimal laser remelting conditions were chosen, while only the overlapping of the remelted traces was varied. Residual stresses were measured with the help of gradual electro-chemical removal of the modified layer. The results of the measured residual stresses confirm that the stresses strongly depend on the presence and quantity of the microstructure constituents in the remelted surface layer.
