Thickness Insensitive Spectrally Selective (TISS) coatings were made of fluoropolymers. Water- and oil-repellent properties (water=150°, n-hexadecane=55°) were improved with the addition of silsesquioxane (AP2IO4PF2 POSS), havind amino (AP), isooctyl (IO) and perfluoro (PF) groups attached on the silsesquioxane (–SiO3/2)8 core. Black spinel pigment was modified with trisilanolisobutyl (IB7T7(OH)3) POSS dispersant that had better influence than isobutyltrimethoxysilane. The surfaces exhibited bi-hierarchical roughness and water sliding angle <10°. POSS also enhanced spectral selectivity.

Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (U2IO4PF2 POSS) bearing 3-(N-(3-triethoxysilylpropyl)ureido)propyl (U), isooctyl (IO) and perfluoropropyl (PF) functionality was tested as precursor for preparation of anticorrosion coatings. This precursor is characterysed by alkoxysilyl groups that are capable in the course of sol-gel processes to form compact network structures. The good anticorrosion properties were attributed to partial self-assembling of precursor molecules close to interface with AA 2024 alloy, while hydrophobic parts were oriented toward the coating surface.
