The primary characteristic of early cells is very likely to be the cell cycle

Phenomenological comparison of the process of vesicle self-reproduction and the cell cycle shows in both cases the need for the proper equilibrium between the growing and division parts of the process. Growth to large extent depends also on the environmental conditions while the division is governed by intrinsic system´s properties. Self-reproduction processes can be in general divided into their growing and division phases. With respect to their duration the growing phase is variable whereas the division phase is not.
