Machining performance challenges in micro-milling : micro-molding and EDM graphite electrode applications

Paper describes guidelines for micro-milling in terms of size effect, as a ratio of undeformed chip thickness to tool edge radius/material grain size, characteristics of micro-endmills, and precision machine tools. Further micro-milling for molding processes of other micro-mass production technology is described, such as direct micro-milling hardened tool steel or micro-milling of graphite electrodes.

Transitioning to sustainable production – Part I: application on machining technologies

This two part paper presents general issues, methods and a case study for achieving production sustainability on a machining technology level. In order to tackle these issues, the paper promotes sustainable production via the alternative machining technologies, namely cryogenic and high pressure jet assisted machining that have a high potential to cut costs and improve competitiveness by reducing resource consumption and thus creating less waste.
