Confinement effect on the interaction between colloidal particles in a nematic

For the stability of 3D structures of colloidal particles in nematic media are crucial effective interactions between particles. These interactions are strongly effected by complex confinement of a nematic medium. We have developed an analitical method that was in detail tested in thin planar layer of a nematic.

Optimizing Landau-de Gennes modelling of nematic liquid crystal colloids

Our modelling of nematic colloids is based on the minimization of the Landau-de Gennes free energy. In 3D systems the problem becomes higly intensive in computation. Preparing for such systems we paid a lot of attention to the agreement of experimental observations and modeling. In the PRL paper focused on the effects of confinement on the details of nematic ordering (biaxiality, order variation, etc).
