In this work, the wild type and the splice variant 2 of human cathepsin E in the pro- and mature form have been expressed in E.coli, refolded and used for biochemical characterization using CD spektrometri, gel chromatography and SDS-PAGE and modeling. Based on these results we can speculate on the oligomeric state of splice variant 2 in comparison to the wild type protein.

Elevated levels of cathepsin E were detected in few cell lines e.g. immune and cancer cells, particularly in NK cells and macrophages. Some cells were treated with pepstatin A. The effect of pepstatin A on the level of aspartic and cysteine cathepsins was studied.
