Protection of the karst underground

We acquired the cross-border “Karst Underground Protection” project in the framework of OP IPA Slovenia-Croatia 2007–2013. The project will combine basic karst research, train professionals through the International School of Karstology, educate locals through lectures and workshops, with the organization of cleaning six Slovene and six Croatian caves contribute to a cleaner environment, publish professional and scientific publications, and help our Croatian partners (Istrian municipalities and Natura Histrica) to improve the regional management of karst and upgrade their cave cadastre.

The challenge of development in karst regions

By applying high quality karstological research results from individual spheres of karstology and interdisciplinary studies, we are preparing a foundation for a rational planning of life in karst regions that will consider the natural and cultural characteristics and vulnerability of karst landscapes, that will supersede the inevitable profit motive, and that will base environmental planning on real socioeconomic conditions that will benefit the population in karst regions as well as their long-term and short-term development.

Planning and research related to the construction of Slovenia’s transportation network – new railway lines

We participated in the planning of the new railway line between Trieste and Divača. For the needs of the construction of the second track for the new railway route of the anticipated 5th Railway Corridor (Barcelona-Kiev), we studied the area between Divača and Črni Kal. In addition to detailed geomorphological, speleological, and hydrological research, we carried out tracer tests to determine the direction of underground water flows.

Karstological monitoring of expressway construction

We concluded the karstological monitoring of the Dolenjska expressway and consolidated new information on the development of the karst between Trebnje and Novo Mesto where the low Dolenjska karst is mostly covered with various alluvial sediments under which a unique karst surface formed; stone forests are especially distinct. The groundwater is frequently close to the surface and the valleys are occasionally flooded.

Special issue of Acta Carsologica 39/2: Research Frontiers and Practical Challenges in Karst Hydrogeology

Karst water sources provide almost a quarter of the world’s population with drinking water and are therefore extremely important. Because they have heterogeneous structures and the pattern of water flow in them is still not completely understood, special research methods and techniques and numerous research studies are needed. The second issue of the Acta Carsologica published last year was devoted to research on karst aquifers. This publication is a major contribution to the better presentation, understanding, and improved knowledge of water flows in karst regions.
