The symposium and the accompanying exhibition shed light from various angles on the diverse roles that castles had in the past, from answering the questions what a castle actually is, what types of castle buildings there are, what role castles had as economic centres, as religious buildings, as cultural monuments and as tourist attractions, as well as what role and destiny was in store for them in the 20th century.
